Sudoku 2.2 Free Sudoku Review for Pocket PC
Sudoku 2.2 by Corncrake Technologies boasts some decent looking visuals for a free Sudoku download. I'd unfortunately grade the hint engine module poorly, which seemed to be a hastily thrown in afterthought. The other issues marring this otherwise good download were niggling ones. If you're running Windows Mobile 5 you'll see a disclaimer regarding graphics quality. As evidenced by these screenshots, it really wasn't bad on my Axim. Even without VGA capabilities, Sudoku 2.2 can still stand fairly tall amongst other free Sudoku titles. Numerals stood out in sharp relief, albeit a bit plain with no customization options available. The default installation will drop it in Program Files --> Games --> Sudoku on your SD card if you're of the WM 5 operating system set. If you'd rather not browse yourself to distraction for each play, copy to Windows --> Start Menu --> Program Files --> Games as a shortcut. GameplayStrangely, the developer didn't see the need to explain the slightly cryptic cross-hatching scheme present in Sudoku 2.2. Documentation is strangely absent, even for a free Sudoku download. You can choose between Easy, Medium and Hard for the difficulty level of the puzzles. Gameplay is straightforward, with standard pencil marks and options to select from 1 through 9 via round buttons at the bottom of the grid. The 9x9 grid appears double-layered with a translucent appearance. You can perform some ad-hoc cross-hatching by tapping the edge of the second layer of the grid with your stylus. This will highlight the corresponding row or column with a red tint. Choosing Mark Selected will tint intersecting rows and columns with your selected number, aiding with your elimination strategies. The barebones hint engine employed in Sudoku 2.2 will simply fill in the next number in the solution, throwing away game spoilers in lieu of more subtle clues. You can't have it all and probably shouldn't expect it with Pocket PC freeware, though. You can find this free Pocket PC Sudoku download

Pros: Boasts good visuals, spontaneous cross-hatching and intuitive pencil mark features with straightforward gameplay. Cons: Hint engine lacks substance and basic online help or documentation. PDAGameGuide Rating: 3.9 out of 5
