Pocket PC Overclocking and Sony Laptop Combustion Woes

In this age of spontaneous Sony battery laptop combustion, it pays to take heed.

Just not so much if you're into Pocket PC overclocking, by the looks of it.

Things are looking a bit grim for Sony at the moment.

Share prices fell faster than Michael Jackson's hair during a Pepsi commercial taping as Apple became the second corporation to issue a recall for some 2 million fire hazard Sony batteries shipped with the laptops.

pocket-pc-overclocking-sony-laptop-battery-recall-newsThis prompted some curiosity in my office with my colleagues.

One of them wondered why his Dell laptop model's batteries hadn't been pegged for the earlier recall, complaining of extreme hot-crotch syndrome while covering Sammy and taking on the bad guys in Mafia.

This prompted talk of an experiment born of fevered, geeky minds as we pondered whether it actually got hot enough to fry an egg.

The logistics of actually carrying out such an endeavour still eludes us, hot plates and tinfoil notwithstanding.

I've habitually thrown caution to the winds when it came to temperature and overclocking in the effort to squeeze more tweaking juice out of my peripherals.

My Pocket PC is not an exception.

You may have already browsed pages showcasing benchmarks during my iPAQ 4150 PocketQuake trials when I cranked it to an obscene 530Mhz from 400Mhz during my XCPUScalar trials, as covered in my Pocket PC Overclocking Guide.

There's no exhilaration quite like smoking your neighbour's PDA pride and joy with blistering framerates seemingly unbecoming of your particular model.

My Dell Axim x51v comes with options to clock up to 624Mhz.

At the time of this article setting it to maximum is more than enough to handle CPU intensive action games on my Pocket PC.

Much less considering similar fried egg experiments.

The only recent reference to PDA overheating that I recall was the iPAQ rx1955, which was panned mercilessly on the ShoppingCompare.com site with a scathing review.

Problems with spontaneous WiFi signal drops attributed to PDA overheating was evident during the rant.

In short, overclock your Pocket PC with abandon if you care nothing for voiding the warranty or shortening the CPU life.

I won't be pondering on similar experiments with Dell and Apple laptops just yet, though.
