Best Galaga Download Resources

Here's your guide to Galaga download resources that offer some quality arcade game freeware,
handy for complementing the Pocket PC version with a desktop PC counterpart.

This article also goes into links to avoid if you're really seeking to capture the essence of the original Galaga arcade version by Namco.

Galagon by Champ

The strangely similar sounding Galagon by Champ was created in 1997.

I played it at length and the gameplay is surprisingly similar to the Galaga original.

That's not too surprising as it was designed as a complete Galaga clone, but Champ stopped designing cloned games after churning out a few more titles.

It's still a commendable effort, but you will still find the official Galaga Pocket PC to be a bit more aesthetically pleasing.

The alien sprites are slightly blocky in this version and the colour usage is slightly different, but it still plays pretty well and warrants a download.

Star Defender Galaga Download Clone

galaga-star-defender-clone By the way, if your PDA game wanderlust brings you to this link inadvertently, avoid it.

If you're on the prowl for free Galaga downloads, this site ludicrously, inexplicably ranks highly in major search engines.

It's called Star Defender, and this incarnation isn't really much like Galaga.

The download link has been shamelessly named "Free Galaga Download" to lure people into playing an extremely short trial version of a shoddy Galaga clone.

I would surmise that this partially explains this site's top ten ranking in Google for the "galaga download" search.

Even worse, it's shareware touted as freeware, so prepared to cough up some more moolah if you're interested in this wretched, misleading download.

Being somewhat of a masochist, I tried the free demo anyway.

I couldn't get past the poor game physics and the unconvincing, poorly designed explosions with no convincing damage engine.

I guess the memory of the original Galaga Namco port that I had been playing to death on my iPAQ 4150 was still a bit too fresh.

Still, if you're morbidly curious, here's the link:

Astroraid Galaga-Asteroids Hybrid

galaga-astroraid-clone Astroraid was a curious one. It's shareware, but it offers you more than the Star Defender demo.

More importantly, it's not shareware masquerading as freeware, either. Consider it straight shareware.

The explosions aren't excellent either, but you can hover over the entire playfield (as per Asteroids), and the alien swarms are fairly entertaining.

It also touts itself as an Asteroids slash Galaga hybrid, but in my opinion it's really not comparable.

The alien swarms are rather docile compared to what Galaga alien swarms unleash on the unwary first-timer.

Free Flash Galaga Download

You'll find a flash version of Galaga at Smiliegames.com.

This Galaga download is a bit too cartoony for my taste, but it puts its own special twist on the original as well.

Free Galaga Download Summary

The only free links I could recommend in good conscience are Galagon by Champ and the flash Galaga version at Smiliegames.

The only caveats would be that the former runs in DOS and may pose issues on certain desktop PC configurations.

The only downside with the Smiliegames version is that the gameplay and audio aren't that authentic but is still a great time-waster for free.

My hands-down favourite is still, of course, the Pocket PC version. View my Pocket PC Galaga download details for more information on Galaga gaming on the PDA platform.
