The Rotten, Putrid Pocket PC Game Guide Awards

Some putrid, foul PDA game downloads simply didn't quite make the cut. At the risk of completely ticking off sponsors of this site, here is the nastiest title worthy of mention amongst the newer releases at the time of this news article.

Egyptian Prophecies - The Fate of Ramses PDA game by TetraEdge stank to high heaven for a number of reasons. I guess I should have clued in since a timed trial version demonstrating interactive aspects of this game was mysteriously absent.

Nevertheless, courage bolstered by Heineken's finest and some great looking screenshots, I braved it and purchased this game solely based on the merits of some simply stellar video clips presented. It was not exactly a cheap buy at twenty-four dollars and change for a Pocket PC game.

As it turned out, the video clips were the best part of this crappy, crappy PDA game download.

I'll stop the roasting of this big flying turkey gobbler download for a moment.

egyptian-prophecies-columnsWe have Pocket PC emulators that can imitate the finest game consoles out there. Our devices are also capable of running MAME32 game ROM downloads for the nostalgic amonst us.

We even have Pocket PC game downloads that rival these emulators, making the latter not entirely necessary (but not quite appeasing our frenzied appetite for ROMs, either).

If we've come so far technologically, why do PPC platforms developers sometimes put their worst foot forward?

While you ponder on that, let's put this big, rotten gobbler on the spit again. Gobble, gobble!

The "protaganist" of this sorry Egyptian "saga" (now I'm using two terms loosely as there really can't be main characters without a cohesive story) has an oddly English inflection to her voice. Any pretense at realism afterwards is a sham of Egyptian proportions.

egyptian-prophecies-dialogueYou are presented with a series of dialogue "trees" (yes, I'm using this term loosely too) to choose from, except ... you have to go through all of them. Every time. With the same outcome to boot.

That's why I can't exactly call them dialogue trees. Trees lead to branches of conversation.

After choosing the appropriate tree (well, they're all equally appropriate for any situation) you'll be subjected to some really crude, bizarre character animation as they relay their attempt at conversation.

Unless the game developers really meant for that non-playable character to be doing something vaguely resembling the macarena while this interaction was happening.

bad-pda-game-trophyTypically, adventure/RPG games of this sort don't loop NPC character conversations over and over ad nauseum. Unless, of course, they're recipients of a Rotten, Putrid PDA Game Guide award. Yes, this Thanksgiving turkey has been out defrosting too long.

Think of these conversational branches becoming gnarled into one giant wood knot, and you get the idea.

Just like it's a sham to only feature an Egyptian Prohecies Pocket PC game cut scene on a PDA gaming merchant site without daring to show anything, uh, interactive for example.

This is the kind of unconscionable, ruthless marketing that will effectively drive the PDA game industry into the ground if it continues. You can avoid filthy download-itis by doing the following:

  • Look for bad reviews
  • It might be obvious to look for good reviews, but to look for bad? I've found that if all user reviews unequivocally state that they would take out a second mortgage to play this really awesome game, then proceed with caution.

Some game developer is rubbing his or her hands gleefully after getting the affiliate buddies to post good reviews. All for minimum, non-quality coding effort to keep the coffers full. Nice. Yes, Virginia, there really is a Satan Claus.

  • Spot authentic positive reviews
  • If you don't see anything like the vitriolic, stinky reviews presented on my site with more positive reviews than negative, it's a potential winner. Especially if the good reviews talk a little bit about the annoyances of the game. pda-game-turkeysChances are, this person is giving an honest evaluation. No game is perfect.

I'll be roasting putrid turkeys for your PDA periodically, so feel free to bookmark this site.

Even better, subscribe to my RSS feed as I update this site on a (for the most part) daily basis. If you're using the Mozila Firefox browser, try the free Sage newsreader for more of my scathing, twist-in-the-gut rants. You can find that orange RSS button on my PDA game blog home page.

You'll be certain to bear witness to the trashing of even more PPC titles worthy of the Putrid Award. There's always a contender flapping and squawking furiously out there.
